The affiliation system is comprised of 3 status levels determined through a group’s attendance at affiliation meetings. Each level gives groups certain registration privileges. Teams that register to play IM’s will fall into one of the 3 levels.

There are 3 meetings per year, generally:

1. The first week of the fall semester
2. The first week of the spring semester

The Athletic Chair is the IM enthusiast of an FSILG, Department, Club or Office. They are expected to encourage peers to participate in IMs, attend semesterly meetings, help create and register teams, coordinate deposit/fee payments, and be the liaison between group & IM Office.

Teams typically are scheduled to play a game once per week, for about an hour. Games are usually played on week nights and weekends. Some teams also choose to play or practice on their own.

The MIT Intramural Program involves thousands of students, both undergraduate and graduate (and some alumni, too), in a wide variety of sports. The program offers short term, low commitment competition in about 18 sports per year. Games occur about once a week for 6-8 weeks. To ensure every student’s chance for participation, each sport consists of leagues of varying skill levels. One of the main goals of the program is to provide students with the opportunity for recreation as an outlet from academic endeavors.

Students play a significant role in the administration of the Intramural Program. In collaboration with the Intramural Office (W35-297), the Executive Committee makes policy and disciplinary decisions, student sport managers organize leagues, and other students officiate games. While some of these positions are paid, many require students to volunteer their time. Without the efforts and support of these students, the MIT Intramural Sports Program would suffer significantly.

Everyone who is eligible to play intramurals at MIT must have a current DAPER membership* or have purchased a day pass to enter the facility and must fall within one of the following categories:

• MIT Student
• MIT Staff, Faculty, Instructors, Lecturers or Post Docs
• MIT Club of Boston Alumni *contact MITCoB for details surrounding IM membership
• Spouses/partners of any of the above

MIT Intramural teams are open to women and men, and there are no male-to-female ratios that need to be adhered to in most cases. Some sports offer co-ed leagues, in which case there are male-to-female ratios that will be specified.

IMs are generally free to play with the exception of a few sports that have a referee/facility fee noted at registration.

We offer leagues for varying skill levels within each sport, from beginner to experienced.

• A League – Higher level of competition. Players may have played in high school or have a higher level of skill.
  
• B League – Intermediate level of competition. Players’ main goal is to be active and have fun.
  
• C League – Lower level of competition. Typically players have little to no experience playing and are just looking to try a new sport.

Yes! Intramurals cannot exist without the leadership of MIT students. Many positions are paid, part-time and an opportunity for students to build their resume. All jobs have a flexible schedule and only require a few (<5) hours per week.

The student Executive Committee, elected by the Athletic Chair Council, meets monthly or as needed to handle day-to-day affairs as determined by the Executive Committee President and Manager of IMs.

Preferred qualifications include:

• Preferred previous experience in activity management
• Enthusiasm and leadership ability
• Interpersonal and customer service skills
